14 March 2019

Regional Development Australia (RDA) Orana Chairman John Walkom and the RDA Board has welcomed Round 3 of the Federal Government's Building Better Regions Fund announcements for the Orana region this week.

"RDA Orana have welcomed four significant funding announcements for the Orana region, totally over $12 million from the Community and Infrastructure Streams of the Federal Governments Building Better Regions Fund," Mr Walkom said.

"The most significant being $9.5 million for a brand new state of the art Australian Opal Centre in Lightning Ridge designed by world-renowned Australian architects Murcutt + Lewin,"

"It has been a long journey for this project, along with the Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton RDA Orana are proud to have supported the initial planning and see it come to fruition,"

"This investment will not only enhance Lightning Ridge on the world stage, but revolutionise the tourism offering for the Walgett Shire and the greater Orana region,"

"Wellington is also set to receive a significant funding injection with $1.5 million committed to Maranatha House for an Intergenerational Child Care Centre,

"Without adequate child care facilities the economic growth of Wellington has been impaired, so this is a fantastic announcement for future growth in the town,

"Macquarie Darling Work Placement Incorporated has also received $80,000 for their 'What YOU'th Can Do' program, a festival of skills to showcase vocational education training in Hospitality and Entertainment in the region,

"With the hospitality industry currently facing a major skills shortage in the region, this is a great opportunity to encourage our young people to not only upskill for the future but stay in our outstanding region," Mr Walkom said.

Dubbo Council also received $45,000 to develop a strategic plan for the development of the Wellington town centre.

"Funding announcements like these not only create jobs and promote economic development for the Orana region, but also have a significant social impact on our communities,"

"Congratulations to all funding recipients," Mr Walkom said.
