How the State's mining sector is working to drive down carbon emissions will be the focus of an industry outlook session at the upcoming Resources, Energy and Industry Innovation Forum (REIIF), being held in Dubbo from 6-9 June.

NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee will provide an overview of how the NSW mining sector is reducing its emissions in line with broader NSW emissions reduction efforts and discuss some of the key challenges facing the NSW mining sector.

“The NSW mining industry understands the need to reduce its emissions footprint to contribute to the NSW Government’s target of net zero emissions by 2050,” he said.

“Progress is being made, including through improved fuel and energy efficiency at mine sites, as well as co-location of renewable energy projects.”

Regional Development Australia (RDA) Orana, CEO and Director Megan Dixon said she was eager to hear Stephen’s presentation and how the mining industry was overcoming some of the challenges a low emissions future holds.

“The four day forum will bring together industry experts, business leaders and government representatives together to discuss innovation and change solutions for a zero emissions future,” she said.

“Stephen’s presentation will also outline some of the innovative approaches being adopted to help deliver a low emissions future for NSW.”

Mr Galilee said innovative future plans, including for pumped hydro at former mine sites, could also contribute to the long-term challenge of transforming the energy grid.

“I am looking forward to sharing details of some of these examples at the Resources, Energy and Industry Innovation Forum,” he said.

“All industries have a role to play in the net zero journey, and mining is no different. There is more to do, and the mining sector is determined to make a positive contribution to the challenge ahead.”

The Forum has been developed in partnership with Regional Development Australia Orana and the Association of Mining and Energy Related Councils NSW.
